Said to be captured in a single session, Woman with a Parasol by Claude Monet captures a moment in time.
Prim Petal Co.’s installation for the 2025 Natio Botanical Moments Competition at The Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show seeks to capture a similar moment in time in our floral interpretation; Woman with a Petal Parasol.
Evoking a sense of depth while drawing the viewer in, our design spills forth from a golden frame, as if Madame Monet and her son have fallen through time into the viewer’s very moment.
The natural textures and movement of fresh and dried flowers and foliage evoke the scene just as impressionists did with their loose brushstrokes in the late 19th century.
Carefully considered placements of floral elements and the larger urn designs pay homage to the original composition of Monet's painting, while adhering to the principles and elements of floral design.
Madame Monet is represented by a white large urn arrangement that cascades to a floral adorned plinth, evoking the movement of her dress in the wind. A botanical parasol crowns the arrangement and is composed of a mix of fresh and dried flowers and foliage, to reflect the interplay of light and colour from the original painting.
Madame Monet’s son is represented by a second smaller urn within the frame, adorned with antique blue flowers providing additional perspective, balance and depth to the scene.
A field of fresh grass, interspersed with mini floral meadows provide visual balance and depth to complete the botanical picture.
Sustainable floral design techniques used include; Australian sourced and in season flowers and foliage, low water flowers, naturally dried elements, sustainably sourced timber, low VOC paints, reusable floral mechanics and up-cycled base materials.
